Unravelling the California Dream

My notion of the California dream has changed. I no longer think that the California dream is just about the weather, fame, and fortune. People come to California for a whole host of other reasons. Many come to California to escape--to escape from frozen, and rigid lifestyles on the East coast. People come with the notion that they will assimilate into the relaxed and easy-going lifestyle that this state has to offer. We have to remember that the term is "California Dream" not something along the lines of "California Reality", so I commend those who actually make the journey here.

  1. I agree. My thoughts of the California Dream were originally sunshine, success, and money, but then I thought it meant being happy. The dream is not really a reality, only for those that make it, which is few.

  2. I agree as well. One thing I'd like to say about this dream is that it's kind of NICE that people have SOMETHING to hold onto during times of stress and sadness. Even though the California dream may not be entirely realistic, sometimes that little hope is enough to make someone's life much better.

  3. I definitely think you're on the right track here-- the juxtaposition of the blizzards other states and the sunshine in California kind of provides a metaphor for the happiness offered in each of these places. Maybe it would be interesting to write a lot about the Dream versus the reality; do people who come to sunny, happy California really find just that?
